For enthusiasts that need a full featured, portable audio recorder but do not want the limitations of hand held recorders, the Tascam BB-1000CD is an excellent choice.

While the smaller hand held portable audio recorders are more convenient and obviously easier to carry around, the Tascam BB-1000CD is still a top contender when it comes to the larger, more fully featured desktop recording units.

About the size of two toasters sat end to end the BB-1000CD is still very slim and stylish, fitting neatly on almost any desktop or classroom table. In contrast to the hand held portable audio recorders reviewed elsewhere on this site, the BB-1000CD has large, easy to read buttons and a very intuitive interface that makes recording and playing back audio files a breeze.

Main Features of the Tascam BB-1000CD

  • Records to SD card or CD-R/RW disc
  • Four built in microphones (two front, two rear)
  • Large built in speakers for playback
  • Two built in XLR microphone inputs
  • Stereo RCA input and output jacks
  • Speed, tone, and fine tuning adjustment dials

Tascam BB-1000CD Pros and Cons:

Of all of the portable recording devices reviewed the Tascam BB-1000CD turned out to be the easiest to operate and record with right out of the box. The controls are very intuitive and clearly marked, while the LCD display panel is fairly large and easy to read.

The unit also features looping controls which allow the user to set a start and end point within a recording, allowing difficult sections to be played over and over as a practice tool. Other nice features of the BB-1000CD include a wireless remote control, independently adjustable front and rear mic recording level dials, and excellent sound playback through the largest speakers available in the desktop units that were studied.

On the downside, the Tascam BB-1000CD does not ship with any included media. A user will have to invest in buying their own SD cards and blank CD-R media before the unit can be used for recording. The unit also cannot burn to CD unless the unit is plugged into a wall socket using the included AC adaptor cord. The unit can record to SD card however while being powered by eight AA batteries (also not included).

Tascam BB-1000CD Portable Audio Recorder Bottom Line:

Compared to other desktop portable audio recorders in its class such as the Roland CD-2e and the SuperScope PSD340, the BB-1000CD ranks near the top simply for the ease of use and flexibility of its design.

Audio recording capabilities are on par with the other units, but its solid design and intuitive interface set it apart from the competition. The Tascam BB-1000CD sells for around $540 at several online retailers.
